Iloilo City holds a special place in my heart. This is where my mom was born and raised. I have many relatives that I have got to meet and know them properly. I even have an ancestor who is known in Pototan (Teresa Magbanua). That is why I consider Iloilo to be my 2nd home.
Although I consider Iloilo to be my 2nd home, there are still places in Iloilo that I have yet to discover ! Before leaving for Iloilo, my cousin texted me if I was game to do some hiking in Bucari. I was like “where’s Bucari?” So I did some research and I found out that Bucari is located in the mountains of Leon. Bucari is known to be “Iloilo’s Little Baguio” due to its cold climate and its attractions that somewhat represents Baguio. There are a lot of things you can do in Bucari like going to Mansiga Cave, seeing Susong Dalaga or Ambassador Hill and Imoy Falls. There are many fruits and vegetables that grow in this area like mangoes, strawberries, sayote, cabbages etc. Since we did not have enough time to do all of these things, we decided to just go trekking and visit the falls and take a quick dip.
Trekking in Bucari is not a walk in the park. You need to have strong legs in order to descend. There comes a part of the trail that becomes steep all of a sudden you will be able to have a hard time going down. My uncle, who is a football coach, quite had a hard time as well. But compare to the other mountains I have climbed, this is easier. I quite had a hard time because we started descending, not ascending. Plus factor is that there is a habal-habal available if you do not want to trek going back to the campsite.
THINGS TO BRING :
extra clothes (when you get to swim in the falls and/or for a quick change before going back to the city)
slippers (your shoes will tend to get muddy along the way so might as well change)
water (2L of bottled water will do)
snacks and chocolate (to eat something along the way)
camera
* For the expenses, estimate amount you have to bring would be around 1,500 – 2,000 pesos. This includes the ff : (payment for the guide, payment for table rental by the falls, payment for riding the habal-habal, payment for lunch and snacks)
TIP : If it is your first time, I strongly suggest to get a local guide. They know the ins and outs of this mountain. There are times there are loose rocks and soil along the way. They will properly guide you to step on which part so that you won’t have any injuries. The guide we got is Kuya Jason.
