In this pandemic, Netflix has played a big role. This is where people get to watch different kinds of movies and TV Shows. Last night, I discovered this movie called Untrue.
Untrue (2019) is a thriller and mentally challenged film directed by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo (who also directed Kita-Kita). Two Filipino individuals (played by Xian Lim and Christine Reyes) met in Tbilisi, Georgia. It was like "fate" or "destiny" that they happened to meet, they say. Mara Villanueva (Reyes) works as a kitchen staff in a resto-bar while Joachim Castro (Lim) is an investor in a vineyard for grapes to create wine. They fell in love and after 3 months, they get married.
Sigrid Bernardo's film did not disappoint. You may think that Mara was innocent and the victim in this whole scenario. At the beginning of the film, Mara went to the police station, all bruised up with a swollen eye, and reported the incident and went looking for her missing husband. She claims that her husband, Joachim, is a lunatic or loka-loka. She made it seem that her husband did all of this to her. As the movie progresses, it will leave you confused where the actual truth really lies. There were scenes in the movie that Joachim had to go see a psychiatrist when his mental condition worsen just to tell his side of the story. There were 2 sides to every story which will leave you wondering, what is the actual truth?
Through the latter part of the film, you will get to see what the actual truth is. The actual truth is that Mara and Joachim both needed help mentally. It just so happened that Mara's strong personality dominated the whole movie that made it seem she didn't need any help. It was her strong personality that made her think of those actions to make Joachim, in the long run, be insane.
I don't want to spoil the movie but I understand where she's coming from, why she did those things. But I personally believe that people in their right mind won't do something like that, revenge as they say.
In Tbilisi, there's this known statue called Kartlis Deda or rather, The Mother of Georgia - statue of a woman holding a bowl of wine on one hand (for those who she considers her friends) while the other hand is a sword (for those she considers as enemies). When you meet someone for the first time, what would you pick then?
The bowl of wine or sword? It is up to you to decide.
