Last meeting in my Introduction to Sociology (INTSOCI) class, as part of our homework, we had to answer this question :
What’s your view of the idea of legalizing divorce in the Philippines?
I was really thinking hard on what to answer for this homework. I even asked some of my friends on what their stand is towards divorce.
Growing up in a family that really practices the Roman Catholic way, we were taught that divorce is bad. The Roman Catholic does not allow divorce to happen to couples because marriage is sacred and God had a purpose with marriage. But ever since I started studying in DLSU, my opinion changed towards divorce.
When using the term “divorce”, we get to think of the word annulment. There is a clear distinction between divorce and annulment. Annulment means it is a legal procedure, which makes the marriage invalid at the very beginning, the marriage never actually happened whereas divorce legally dissolves a marriage that actually happened. Now that both definitions have been cleared, I can clearly say that the Philippine government should think of making divorce legal.
There are different reasons why people would want to have a divorce. One reason is that the woman gets to experience being abused while being in a relationship with her husband. It is not good for women to be abused and this can create a traumatic experience for the child which leads to low self-confidence. Another reason is that there are married couples, when in a long relationship, their sparks get to fade away. Usually, when using annulment, it has to show proof that either the wife or husband has a psychological disorder/sickness. We have nothing to do if married people would want to divorce. It is their life and choice why they thought of that.
How about you? What’s your view on legalizing divorce in the Philippines?
